I Fink U Freeky – Die Antwoord

Ten$ion - Die Antwoord

Ten$ion – Die Antwoord

There is something ironic about watching the video of Die Antwoord’s ‘I Fink U Freeky’ and having probably one of the freakiest bands on the planet telling you that they think you’re freaky. However, Die Antwoord somehow get away with it. The video could well have been made at a Victorian Freak Show with it procession of weird looking characters. The fact that it is shot in black and white and filmed in grimy locations all helps add to the shock factor. And that is what Die Antwoord do, they aim to shock. But they do so with a great dance soundtrack

‘I Fink You Freaky’ has DJ Hi-Tek hitting you with hardcore beats while Yolandi Visser’s schoolgirl-ish rapping and singing are angelic in contrast to the demonic lyrics and images. We also have Ninja’s skollie interlude further fuelling the good and evil contrasts. But at the end of the day, this is a darn catchy tune and there is a car crash attraction to the band that has shown that their first album, ‘$o$’ was not just a flash in the pan success in the US as ‘Ten$ion’, their second offering and from which ‘I Fink U Freeky’ was taken, also charted on the US Album charts although it had a slightly lower peak of 143 compared to their debut’s peak of 109. It did, however, help build on their popularity in the States. Subsequent releases have gone to 37 (2014’s ‘Donker Mag’) and 34 (2016’s ‘Mount Ninji And Da Nice Time Kid’).

One does have to wonder how long they can keep up this level of interest and will they be able to reinvent themselves in a world that constantly demands change. Time will tell, but as long as we as a human race maintain a fascination for the freaky, bands like Die Antwoord will continue to fare well.
