Henry Ate – Slap In The Face

‘Henry’ appeared on ‘Henry Ate’s debut album ‘Slap In The Face’ in 1996 and found Karma Swanepoel et al in a laid back and melodic mood. Karma’s vocals are at the fore of the song and they glide along over a lovely jangly guitar (a little in the style that Johnny Marr of The Smiths made famous). Underpinning this are Julian Sun’s harmonising backing vocals.

The lyrics are somewhat surreal, perhaps being about a lost love (“Such a special boy/you can fall in love but he’ll walk away”), or one lost to madness (“He’s off to the place he hides”) or even the death of someone (“Up in the big blue”). But whatever they are about, they are delivered in a beautiful package of instrument, voice and tune. Henry Ate are no longer together and over ten years later, we still find ourselves singing ‘Henry I’m missing you’.

Lyrics:

Henry sits in the corner on bad days till quite late
So anything you can’t find you left there ask Henry what he ate today
Never before have I seen a smile upon a face like Henry’s
Such a special boy you can fall in love but he’ll walk away

Back to the place he hides
Up in the big blue
Up in the big blue sky

Henry spends most Sundays conversing with our walls
He says their views are stable never question his so his empire can never fall
Suddenly he’s up on the table dancing around yelling out his philosophy
The view of the sun from the moon can’t be beaten

He’s off to the place he hides
Up in the big blue
Up in the big blue sky

Henry Ate his way to the moon didn’t stop there
Henry he ate right through
Henry Ate his way to the moon
Come back soon
Henry I’m missing
The view of the sun from the moon can’t be beaten x 4

He’s off to the place he hides
Up in the big blue
Up in the big blue sky

Henry Ate his way to the moon didn’t stop there
Henry he ate right through
Henry Ate his way to the moon
Come back soon
Henry I’m missing you
