Make Her An Angel – Roy Bulkin
Make Her An Angel – Roy Bulkin
Roy Bulkin’s music career took off when he was the cover version voice on the Springbok Hits album, singing ‘Morning Has Broken.’ He went on from there to have a distinguished career, scoring 6 top 20 hits in South Africa. One of his most successful chart appearances was in 1977 with ‘Make Her An Angel’ which peaked at number 6, his highest chart placing (he also achieved this with ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’)
The song was penned by Nick Taylor and is a song of lost love, expounding the virtues of the loved one, saying she is too good for him and “you take and you make her an angel…because she sure as hell’s too good to live with me down here on earth.” Bulkin’s voice was well suited to the song and at times sounds a little like Taylor himself. It’s not too hard to see why the South African public took to the song back in the 70’s. He probably wouldn’t score a hit with it today, as his voice doesn’t sound ‘Idols’ enough. It was, however, definitely a song of its time
