Sheriff Bush And Deputy Blair – Nukular Stompers

In March 2003, America and Britain invaded Iraq following a long build up which was fraught with protests and legal wrangling. Of course what this world drama was missing was a soundtrack. Step up Dave Williams, one time member of Flibbertigibbet and Irish group Mellow Candle. He and his Nukular Stompers put together the hoedown that should have been a global smash.

If you don’t end up barn dancing away to this banjo and fiddle driven ditty, you may just be rolling on the floor laughing at the words. Written by Williams, the lyrics seemed to sum up everything the anti-war contingent felt about Bush and Blair (the latter being seen as a lapdog to the U.S.)

If you want serious war protest, then stick to Dylan’s ‘Master’s Of War’ or McGuire’s ‘Eve Of Destruction’, but for a great satirical take on it, you can’t do much better than the Stompers. Hopefully we never get to hear the cover of the Beach Boy’s ‘Barbara Ann’ with the lyrics changed to ‘Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.’

Can of Worms – Nukular Stompers (2003)

Lyrics:
Welcome to the party at the global saloon
Pour a drink and pull up a chair
Why look who’s comin’ in through the batwing doors
(If it ain’t) Sheriff Bush and Deputy Blair

Our sheriff is a good man and a gentleman at heart
And for years he hunted down the Reds
But now they’ve left the prairies and he’s turned his eagle eye
On those folks who wear turbans on their heads

Some people don’t like him: they just don’t understand
He ain’t like the rest of us, he don’t see shades of grey
He’s got big things on his mind and a big gun in his hand
You’re for us or against us……so have a nice day.

Now he’s a real tough sheriff and he loves you like a son
But you’d better choose your friends real well
Cause if you make him mad, he’s gonna pull out his six gun
And he’s gonna blow y’all to hell

Oh give us your diamonds, your gold and your oil
Give us your copper and your money
We’ll give you Big Macs, Baseball caps and gangsta rap
And a place in our global economy

Well I’m a mite tetchy and I don’t want no turbans messing with my brent crude
We’ve gotta teach some respect for old Uncle Sam
If we can’t catch Osama, then we hit Saddam

Some people don’t like him: they just don’t understand
He ain’t like the rest of us, he don’t see shades of grey
He’s got big things on his mind and a big gun in his hand
You’re for us or against us……so have a nice day.

He’s a real tough sheriff and he loves you like a daughter
Don’t go messing with the bad boys in the alley
Cause if you go and cozy up to folks you oughta not
You’ll get a heat seeking missile up your valley

Share with us your diamonds, your gold and your oil
Give us your labour and your sweat
We’ll give you Kentuckey Frieds, GM foods and pesticides
And thirty seven brands of cigarettes

Some people don’t like him: they just don’t understand
He ain’t like the rest of us, he don’t see shades of grey
He’s got big things on his mind and a big gun in his hand
You’re for us or against us……so have a nice day.

So sign up boys and join the wagon train
We’re riding off to fight for peace
So come along with yer sheriff and deputy
We’re heading out to tame the wild east

Yeee-hah!
