Back in 1965, songs didn’t last very long. The 3 minute pop song was the norm, but the A-Cads managed to pack all the pop they needed into the 2 minutes and 16 seconds that was ‘Hungry For Love’. They did take 6 seconds more than Johnny Kidd & The Pirates to say the same things. Perhaps they were just a little hungrier, or maybe it was just that pop songs had got longer in the 2 years between Johnny Kidd’s version and the A-Cads one.

The sixties was an exciting time in the music world and South Africa was certainly producing a number of great beat groups at that time, some of whom still garner international interest in a way that the more modern SA groups can only dream of. Along with the likes of The Bats and Johnny Kongos & The G-Men, the A-Cads ploughed a beat furrow which included ‘Hungry For Love’, a number 1 hit on the Springbok Charts.

The A-Cads manage to bring a fuller version to the table than Johnny Kidd did. Listening to the two next to each other, I think that the South Africa group does a better version. It’s tighter, edgier and the harmonies are just that little bit better. ‘Hungry For Love’ by the A-Cads, although not written by a South African, was certainly one of the classics of its time, and still holds its own today.

Lyrics:

I’m so hungry, so hungry for love
I’m so hungry, so hungry for love
What’s the use of worryin’
You don’t care about the mood I’m in

I just want to spend every week
Every day, every hour with you
Oh, won’t you change your mind and be a little kind
I’m so hungry for love

Just remember and you’ll feel so glad
There were times when you made me feel bad
What’s the use of worryin’
You don’t care about the mood I’m in

I just want to spend every week
Every day, every hour with you
Oh, won’t you change your mind and be a little kind
I’m so hungry for love

What’s the use of worryin’
You don’t care about the mood I’m in

I just want to spend every week
Every day, every hour with you
Oh, won’t you change your mind and be a little kind
I’m so hungry for love

So hungry for love
So hungry for love
