The World Cup 2010 has come and gone, leaving in its wake a load of happy memories and incomplete road works. The wing mirror socks, the vuvuzelas, the goals, the fouls, the missed penalties (sorry Ghana) and of course the songs of which there were many all played their part to make it a great occasion.

Not having enough confidence in our own talent, we imported all these international stars to sing on our behalf for our world cup. The best we seemed to manage was to have Freshlyground feature on the Shakira track. South Africans obviously aren’t capable of writing and producing quality music.

(Rant over)

Well, those guys making the decision obviously never took time out to listen to Hot Water’s ‘Laduma’. This song is so catchy that it should be quarantined. It has all the joy of an African summer day, township celebration, and a South African radio commentator mentioning that a goal has been scored, rolled into three and a half minutes of pure
pleasure.

Forget Waka Waka, rather check out Water Water (of the hot kind) and reminisce about the best world cup ever with the best world cup song ever.

South – Hot Water (2011)

Lyrics:

Turn on your radios
Turn on your TVs
Because today is the day that
Everybody has been waiting for

Laduma was a boy
Who grew up in the heartland
And in the morning he’d speak to his mother
Come the evening she’d tell him the story
And it would bring up his deepest dream

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma

Comes a time when a boy must reach manhood
She had helped him as much as she could
All the while in the face of a wide world
He heard a voice and he knew he’d been called

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma

Football commentary

Now he tours the place on the goal line
He looks within sees the crowd all around
He stands alone and in the moment his star shines
He hears the word at the back of his mind

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma

Laduma follow your star
All the goals in your heart
Laduma follow your star
Laduma
