Liefling – Gé Korsten
Liefling – Gé Korsten (One for the rugby lovers – honestly)
On 29 September 1999, South Africa lost one of the leading luminaries
of the music world when news of the suicide of Gérald Korsten came
though. He was 71 years old. Gé entered the realms of ‘household name’
in South Africa with his operatic tenor voice and often teamed up with
the soprano Mimi Coertse, another householder namer.
‘Liefling’ is not an operatic piece, but is more of a big love song
featuring an operatic voice. The lush string arrangements sweep and
swoop as Gé builds each refrain towards the powerful chorus that would
leave most of us with strained vocal chords.
Apparently the Bulls fans love singing this before rugby matches, so
it’s a much more macho song than a first listen may let on. Steve
Hofmeyr, André Schwartz and Rino Hugo are a few of those who have
recorded versions of this, but none give you the goosebump that Gé’s
version does.

Lyrics:
Chorus
Nou is die tyd moenie wag
Want ek verlang elke dag
Hier is my hart neem dit nou
Hier is my hart net vir jou
Chorus
Liefling jy weet
